Banteer Railway Station

Banteer Railway Station

Groups audience:

Banteer Railway Station opened on 15th April 1853. It is part of the Great Southern & Western Railways. It was once the junction for the Kanturk/Newmarket Line which opened in 1889 and closed in 1963. A daily service is now offered every hour to Kerry & countrywide. In the past it was quite a busy station shipping animals, beet and many other goods. Many immigrants began their journey worldwide from Banteer station and many sad scenes were witnessed. Although the station has been modernised over the past number of years the cabin and all the old controls are still in place. The timetable for steam engines was removed, this is a big disappointment as we may never see the steam train pass here again. Also removed was the goods store which was a beautiful stone building. Banteer Station recently came second to Killarney in a competition for railway stations.
