Banteer Community Centre and Sports Field

Groups audience:

Banteer Sports Field was opened in 1952. The sports were famous since 1886 when the inaugural meeting was held. At the 1888 meet the world champion Denis Horgan secured his first win at the age of 17. The Banteer venue was convenient to the Banteer Railway Station which may be responsible for an attendance of 6000. The All Ireland sports were held in the present sports field in 1965, 1966 and 1972. In the late 1800's cycling was introduced to the sports meeting and Banteer became famous for its cinder track. Many GAA finals have been played there and the field is home to Banteer & Lyre GAA clubs. It is a community sports field, soccer is played there and athletes, joggers and walkers enjoy the track as well as the new walkway around the pond.
