Mahoney's – Lombards Cottage

Mahoney's – Lombards Cottage

Bought by the O'Mahoney family in the 1950s this was previously known as Lombardstown Cottage. In the 1800s the cottage belonged to the Lombard family with one branch living here while another branch lived in Lombardstown House./In 1798 Major Lombard was killed in Wexford at the Battle fo Oulart. The Major died intestate and his lands were left to his daughters. Two of his daughters married very well including to a Sir Laurence Cotter (descendant of a Cromwellian soldier/officer) and she became Lady Cotter of Glantane./Another sister married a Delacourt of Mallow. The house was occuppied by the WIdow Lombard and two daughters in 1826 when it was raided by the Whiteboys. A man named Thornton was shot dead during the raid. We believe Thornton was a constable part of a group aiming to ambush the Whiteboys./ The house was leased to the Bolster's after this. In 1892 the Ludgate's took the lease on the cottage. One of these Ludgate's had a sportshop in Cork city. A David Ludgate sponsored a cup for a salmon fishing competition on the adjacent Blackwater river in the 1960s.
