Glantane National School

Glantane National School

Opened in 1847 this school had a chequered history. In the mid-20th century the local community wanted to turn over a new leaf by building a new school. The Minister for Education at the time was the former IRA commander Sean Moylan. Din Murphy (local head of IRA)  of Glantane was deputised to meet Moylan but was told there were no funds available for new schools. "Shag it lads, the only way to get one is if the current one burned down". Soon after some cans of petrol were stolen from a woman's car at the nearby shop and on the 18th of December the old school burned down. It had snowed the night before and footprints led from a local house to the school. However, these footprints were soon masked as the community turned out to see the burning school.
