Buckleys Lackendarragh

Buckleys Lackendarragh

This was the home of Con Buckley who was 2nd Lieutenant in the Lombardstown IRA company and was a member of the full time Mallow Batallion Column. This home was also a safe house for those on the run. When Gen.Lucas was brought to O Connells another prisoner there was transferred to this house. The old house on the right was the dwelling at that time and the two-storey house was built later. Lackendarragh townland has an interesting history. It was the property of the O Mullane family and Catherine O Mullane was Daniel O Connell’s mother. Part of it was also owned by the O Callaghans and the lot was confiscated after the Cromwellian conquest. The Lombard family got some and more was purchased by the Newmans of Newberry manor. The O Mullanes got some of it back later but much of the townland was classed as unprofitable mountain.
