Scanlons Home Laharan

Laharan Cross became a well-known refuge for Volunteers from all over North and Mid Cork. After many ambushes and training exercises the Mallow Battalion Column regularly retired to Laharan Cross where shelter, sustainance and accommodation were provided in a number of houses in the area. It was also an assembly point before setting out on missions and many locals were members of Lombardstown Company of Volunteers. The nearby Scanlon family home was one such refuge and three sons, Patrick, David and John were active volunteers. The house in the photo was part of the original with an extension added in later years which can be seen on the right side of the roof and members of the family continue to live there.
