Ivy church and graveyard

The Ivy Chapel and graveyard is approximately 1 mile from Mountmellick on a hidden lane off the Ridge Road leading to Portlaoise. Its origins pre-dates Christian times and the chapel itself dates back to medieval times. Victims of the famine and typhoid, as well as 9 of the 1798 rebels who were hanged are buried in the graveyard and it was used as a graveyard until the late-20th century. Restoration work in the cemetery started in 1994 to restore and ensure the safety of graves, as well as construction of an oratory to facilitate the annual cemetery graveyard mass.
