St. Mary's Church of Ireland

St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, Doneraile. This Church was established by Wm St. Leger in 1633 whose Castle was inside the wall opposite. William was the land Agent in Ireland for the Duke of Buckingham who was the most influential member at the Court of Charles 1. William made some valuable land acquisitions in Ireland and was Lord President of Munster. The St. Leger family were the inhabitants of Doneraile Court and had a vast estate in Cork and Waterford. The Church in Doneraile was effectively their church and St. Leger family members always occupied a reserved place within the Church. The last Lord Doneraile Hugh died in 1956 and his wife Mary Isobel died in 1975. They are buried side by side in the graveyard of this Church.
