Groups audience:

House No 36 in the 1911 census was the home of the Moloney family and according to that census the head of the family was Thomas Moloney, whose occupation is listed as a blacksmith. He lived there with his wife Ellen and seven children, Annie, James, Margaret, John, Thomas, Michael and Mary. This was a thatched house with just two windows to the front, and the forge was at the rear of the premises. There was an entrance to the forge between the Mulcahy and Moloney houses, which we can still see today. We see from a picture we obtained from James T. Quain,, editor of the Ardmore Journal and published in the first edition of The Ardmore Journal, complements of the late Michael Moloney, Postmaster, that an L shaped building is clearly visible here in 1919. We do not know when this section of the building was demolished. Thomas’s sons, James and Tommy later followed him into the business. The Moloney’s later operated the post office from here, with Michael as the postmaster and John, or Johnny as he was known, one of the post men. There was also a small shop attached to the post office at one time. This property was in Moloney ownership until approx. 2014 and was only recently sold. It now operates as the T-Flag cafe & shop.
