Murphys thatched cottage, P44 Main Street, Ardmore, Waterford

Groups audience:

Although situated on Main St. this house is located in a detached portion of Farrangarret townland. As a result this has been a surprisingly difficult house to identify in the 1901 & 1911 censuses.

After 1911 the Valuation cancel books show the sequence of tenants in this thatched cottage as William Foley, Margaret Terry (1935), Mary Aherne, John Cashman & Dr. Denis M Murphy (1965).Constable Hanly & family may have occupied the house in 1901 and at some stage also we have been told that a Constable Flaherty, RIC, and family lived here as well, presumably as a tenant. A Sgt. M O’Flaherty was commended by the RNLI for his part in the events surrounding the sinking of the Marechal de Nouailles in 1913. His son Stephen Flaherty is listed in the attached school roll, and went on to become renowned as the ‘Volkswagen King’ because he was the first person outside of Germany to get a franchise to build Volkswagens. Referencehttp://irishconstabulary.com/topic/682/Shipwreck-A-Gallantry-award-for-s...http://www.waterfordmuseum.ie/exhibit/web/Display/article/331/18/The_Ard...
