McCarthy's homestead

McCarthy's homestead

McCarthy's farmhouse was a key location during the War of Independence. Most famously it was one of the safehouses used to keep General Lucas captive but it was also used to store guns captured in the raid on Mallow barracks. Dev is also believed to have stayed in this house at some stage./ The interior of this very well kept house stil has some original features and one can imagine the illustrious General and Dev himself, bending their heads low as they went in and out the back door./ 1911 Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Kilshannig/Creggan..., Daniel, Ellen and Hannie McCarthy and all remembered within the local community. Mary & Hannie both worked in shops in Glantane village./One local man says he first saw the card game "Patience" being played by General Lucas. The General was moved to Templeglantane, Co. Limerick, after his stay in McCarthy's.
