Old Tullylease National School

Old Tullylease National School

Groups audience:

Built in 1868 in the townland of Knockatoumpane, we visited this boarded up school with some of it's past pupils, Nicholas Ring (1973, Mike Larkin (1960), Ben McMahon & Bertie Murphy (1957). Together the former scholars came up with the following list of former teachers - Mattie O'Brien (1920s), Ciss Roche, Master Dunworth, Miss Nora Wlash, Paddy Long. Master Long had a son, Joe, who became headmaster in a school in Bray. They also remembered a Miss Cremin and Mary O'Donnell who married a Geary man from Newcastlewest in Limerick. A Mrs Sheehan also taught here as well as a Mary McAuliffe, helen O'Dea and Marie Collins who was the last principal who moved to the new school in the village. A Mrs Eileen Curtin also taught here. The 50th anniverary of 1916 was celebrated in the school and it made a big impression ona  6 year old Nick Ring who remembers marching around the school yard. Knockatoumpane is the hill of the hump.
