St. Joseph's Catholic Church

St. Joseph's Catholic Church

Building of the church started in 1864 under the supervision of parish priest Very Rev. Thomas Murphy and it was opened in 1878. The bell tower was added in 1912 and in 1965 an extension was added which changed the shape of the church from rectangle shape to cruciform shape. The extension was open by President Éamon de Valera, an acquaintance of Fr. Burbage, former parish priest of Mountmellick from 1940-1966. Centenary of the opening of St. Joseph’s Church took place in 1978. The main feature of the front of the church is the rose window and the facade showing St. Joseph. Priests buried in the church yard are the Very Rev. Thomas Murphy, Very Rev. John J. Doyle, Rev. Eugene J. O’Neill, Rev. David Doyle CC, Very Rev. J O’Gorman and Fr. Thomas Burbage PP.
