House

 

Barry Family, Knockansweeny, Glantane

This has been the residence of the resident medical doctor for the Dispensary District of Kilshannig. The house dates from c.1860 after a new, purpose built dispensary was built nearby in c.1850, with accommodation for a practice nurse and upgraded facilities following the Famine.

 

Ring Family, Lombardstown

This house was built by Nathaniel Gardiner in the late 1800’s and served as the grist mill residence until the mill burned down in 1882. The house was later leased from Nathaniel Gardiner by Timothy Ring who came to the area as a postman in the 1890’s.

 

Crowley’s Glounminane

This townland was owned by Samuel Townsend in the mid 1800’s. It was used as a base for major game shoots on Mount Hillary and the gamekeeper at Longueville, Arthur Olyatt  organised many of these and some hounds for this purpose were kept there also.

 

Corbetts Laharan

The Corbett family have been resident here since famine times when Silver C. Oliver was landlord. Jeremiah O Callaghan was leasing substantial property from Oliver and sub-letting to The Corbetts. Patrick Corbett was active in the Lombardstown Volunteer Company.

 

McCarthy Garranes

This property was farmed by the McCarthy family back to famine times and was inherited by an O Shea lady who ran a smoke house from the premises. Silver C. Oliver was the landlord in the mid 1800’s and it was a Newman property following the Cromwellian Confiscations.

 

Murphy/Maguire House

This is the current home of Adrian Maguire the well-known former jockey and now horse trainer. The Maguire family purchased the almost derelict property in c 2001 and restored the old house as can be seen in the old and current photos.

 

Lombardstown Post Office

This fine 3 storey, stone building was built by George Gardiner in 1895/6 on leased land .The land was owned by the descendants of the Lombard family and Lombardstown Creamery had a lease on it and seem to have sublet this 2 acre property to the Musgrave Brothers who sublet it to George Gardiner

 

Singleton Family Home

This is beside Tarrants and Gortroe Inn  which you captured already. Phil Singleton was Captain of the Lombardstown Company of the Irish volunteers during the War of Independence and spent time in jail. He was also a full time soldier with the Mallow Battalion Column.

 

O'Sullivan Family Home

This  holding was purchased from the O Shea family in 1941 who had occupied the property  from before the early 1800’s. The house was originally a three roomed thatched farmhouse that was abandoned in 1953.

 

Agent's House

The Kiely's were landagents for the ??? Family in this part of Laharan. Q FOR DONIE
