Groups audience:

The three properties that we see here today were originally stables for Ahernes Hotel across the road which was owned by William Harris in 1916. As well as an extended frontage they also had extensive out-houses to the rear with a walled in yard. They were later used as store houses and a garage by a local building Contractor James Quain. The garage had large grey double doors where he stored a red Austin lorry for many years, which was used to draw sand and gravel for his business. The garage doors served as the goals for many an intense game of football or hurling over the years. When the street always felt much larger, and the doors, or goals much smaller, or larger depending on which way you were playing - in or out. The properties were compulsorily purchased by the County Council in circa 1983 and the present houses built.
