Built in the 1670s on the Isla Grande the Fortress of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was connected to the adjacent Isla de Diego & Forte Sao Jose, and the mainland, in 1889. The islands became forts and thereafter became port structures and are now home to one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the world.
